Privacy Policy
Effective May 21, 2026
Chapters is a quiet place to write down your life story. The things you share here are personal, and we treat them that way. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, who helps us run the service, and the choices you have. It applies to the Chapters website and app (the “Service”), operated by Chapters LLC (“Chapters,” “we,” or “us”).
The short version
- Your stories, photos, and recordings belong to you.
- We do not sell your information, and we do not show you ads.
- Your stories are never used to train artificial-intelligence models — not ours, and not our providers’.
- We share your information only with the companies that help us run the Service, and only so the Service can work.
- You can edit or delete your information at any time.
What we collect
We collect only what we need to help you write and keep your story.
- Account information. Your email address and a password. Passwords are stored in a securely hashed form and are never visible to us.
- Profile details. Your name and the reason you are writing, which you provide when you begin.
- Your stories. The conversations you have with your interviewer, the chapters compiled from them, and any photos you add.
- Voice recordings. If you choose to speak rather than type, your spoken audio is sent to be transcribed into text. We keep the transcript as part of your story; we do not retain the audio recording after it is transcribed.
- Payment information. If you subscribe, buy a gift, or order a printed book, your payment is handled by our payment processor. We never see or store your full card number.
- Basic technical information. Limited logs and identifiers used to keep the Service secure and to prevent abuse.
How we use your information
- To ask thoughtful questions and draw out your story.
- To save your chapters and compile them into your book.
- To read your story aloud and to turn your speech into text.
- To process payments and, if you order one, to print and ship your book.
- To send you necessary messages, such as sign-in confirmations and gift notifications.
- To keep the Service secure, working, and reliable.
The companies that help us run Chapters
Chapters is built on trusted services that process information on our behalf, under their own security and confidentiality obligations. They may use your information only to provide their service to us — not for their own purposes, and not to train artificial-intelligence models.
- Supabase — stores your account, your stories, and your photos, and keeps you signed in.
- Anthropic — powers the interviewer that asks your questions and helps compile your conversation into written chapters.
- OpenAI — reads your story aloud and transcribes your spoken answers into text.
- Stripe — processes subscription, gift, and book payments securely.
- Resend — delivers account and gift emails.
- Lulu — prints and ships your physical book, only when you order one. We share the contents of that book and your shipping address for that purpose.
- Vercel — hosts the Service.
- Upstash — helps protect the Service from abuse.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the safety and rights of people, or in connection with a sale or transfer of the business — in which case your information would remain subject to a policy at least as protective as this one.
What we will never do
- We will never sell your information.
- We will never show you advertising or share your information with advertisers.
- We will never use your stories to train artificial-intelligence models.
- We will never share your story publicly or post it without your permission.
Keeping and deleting your information
We keep your information for as long as your account is active so that your story is always there when you return. You can edit your profile and your chapters at any time within the Service.
If you would like to delete your account and the stories in it, write to us at hello@my-chapters.com and we will remove them from our systems. Copies may remain briefly in routine backups before they are overwritten, and a printed book already in production cannot be recalled.
How we protect your information
Information is encrypted while traveling to and from the Service and is stored with access controls in place. Passwords are kept only in hashed form. No method of storage or transmission is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your story as carefully as we would want our own protected.
Cookies
Chapters uses a small number of essential cookies to keep you signed in and to keep the Service secure. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking, and we do not follow you around the web.
Your choices
You may review and update your name and the reason you are writing in your profile, edit or remove individual chapters, and download or order a printed copy of your book. You may ask us to delete your account entirely at any time.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information — such as the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of it. To make any such request, write to us at hello@my-chapters.com. California residents have the specific rights described in the next section.
California privacy rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you specific rights. Over the past twelve months, the categories of personal information we have collected are:
- Identifiers, such as your name and email address.
- Account and profile details you provide.
- The content you create — your stories, chapters, and photos.
- Audio information, if you choose to speak your answers.
- Limited internet and technical activity used to keep the Service secure.
We collect this information for the purposes described above. We do not sell or share your personal information, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
You have the right to know what we collect, to access or delete it, to correct it, and not to be treated differently for exercising these rights. You may make a request yourself or through an authorized agent by writing to hello@my-chapters.com. We will confirm the request through your account email before acting on it.
Children
Chapters is intended for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make a meaningful change, we will revise the date above and, where appropriate, let you know within the Service.
